For any bookkeepers looking to cement themselves as reputable and certifiably dependable, joining an officially recognised organisation can be incredibly effective.

If you can show off a membership to an elite bookkeeping club, you’re guaranteed to be held in the highest regard – resulting in more business from higher-paying clients.

There are a few options when it comes to picking a group. Here, we take a closer look at some of the best organisations for bookkeepers to join.

Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB)

A real giant of bookkeeping organisations, the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers (ICB) aims to promote bookkeeping as a profession and improve the career prospects of its members.

ICB members can enjoy access to the annual Bookkeepers Summit (an excellent networking opportunity) as well as online resources, a technical helpline, professional development support, updates and newsletters, and a range of discounts and preferential rates on products supplied by ICB partners.

There’s also the ICB job vacancy portal, which can prove extremely valuable to any jobseekers looking for new opportunities.

International Association of Bookkeepers (IAB)

The International Association of Bookkeepers (IAB) was set up in 1973 and now has more than 10,000 members in 60 countries, endorsing and encouraging the highest possible standards in bookkeeping.

Students, business owners and accounting professionals all form part of IAB’s membership roster, with the organisation offering a support line, courses and qualifications, a “find a bookkeeper service”, a list of recommended study textbooks, and an exclusive membership area.

Their website is packed with resources and is well worth a look.

The Bookkeepers Alliance

One of the youngest organisations for bookkeepers to join is The Bookkeepers Alliance. Despite having only been launched in 2015, The Bookkeepers Alliance has built a strong membership base. It has good reviews on TrustSpot and is perhaps slightly more modern-minded than its counterparts, having been created during the digital age.

The Bookkeepers Alliance was established for four key purposes: functioning as a one-stop shop for bookkeepers; offering support resources for skill development; providing advice for starting, marketing and growing a bookkeeping practice; and building trusted relationships between bookkeepers and valued suppliers.

The website is centred around support, with a busy blog full of articles and a shop selling professional bookkeeping courses.
